Common Water & Wastewater Valve Applications

Six project locations where valve duty should be reviewed against the actual medium, solids data, chemical exposure, pressure conditions and installation.

Raw-water intake and wastewater headworks with industrial valves and process piping

Raw-Water Intake & Wastewater Headworks

Isolate and control influent at intake works, screens, channels and headworks before downstream treatment.

Water treatment clarifier and sedimentation process piping with valves

Coagulation, Sedimentation & Clarifiers

Control and isolate process lines serving chemical dosing, clarification and settled-water transfer.

Water filtration and backwash system with industrial valves

Filtration, Backwash & Disinfection

Manage filter isolation, backwash cycles and lines exposed to disinfectants or treatment chemicals.

Water pump station and force main with industrial valves

Pump Stations, Force Mains & Distribution

Combine isolation and backflow protection around pumps, rising mains and clean-water distribution lines.

Wastewater biological treatment and secondary clarifier process piping

Biological Treatment & Secondary Clarifiers

Review valve duty on aeration, recirculation and secondary-treatment pipework against actual process conditions.

Sludge thickening and dewatering equipment with industrial valves

Sludge Thickening, Digestion & Dewatering

Assess solids concentration, fibres, grit, viscosity and operating cycle before selecting the flow path and actuation.

Service Conditions That Drive Valve Selection

The actual water or wastewater stream—not the industry label—defines the valve configuration.

Solids, Fibres & Sludge Concentration

Use total suspended solids (TSS) for liquid streams and total solids (%) for sludge. Include fibres, rags, viscosity and settling behaviour.

Grit, Sand & Abrasive Particles

Particle concentration, size, hardness and velocity affect wear at the disc, seat and other wetted surfaces.

Industrial valve assembly for water and wastewater process piping

H₂S, pH, Chlorides & Treatment Chemicals

Confirm sulfide exposure, pH, chlorides, chemical concentration, temperature and contact time before material and lining review.

Pressure, Surge, Air & Operating Cycle

Minimum, normal and maximum flow, pressure, pump starts, close time and line profile influence check, air and actuation requirements.

01 What information should I send for a water or wastewater valve quotation?

Send the process stage, actual medium, valve duty, nominal size, pressure rating, end connection, operation method, quantity and required document scope. For wastewater or sludge, include total suspended solids (TSS) or total solids percentage, together with any fibres, rags, grit, chemical exposure and viscosity information. If available, include the valve datasheet, MTO, P&ID or project specification.

02 Can the same valve configuration be used for raw water, treated water, wastewater and sludge?

Not automatically. A clean-water isolation duty and a fibrous, abrasive or chemically exposed wastewater duty can require different flow-path, sealing, material, coating or actuation review. Confirm the actual medium at each valve location rather than selecting from the overall plant name alone.

03 Should I report TSS or total solids percentage for wastewater valve selection?

Use TSS, normally expressed in mg/L, for liquid wastewater streams. Use total solids percentage for sludge streams. The figure alone is not enough for difficult duties: also identify fibres or rags, grit, particle size, viscosity, settling behaviour and the expected operating cycle. These details affect the required flow path, wear review and operating torque.

04 What is the best check valve for a sewage pump?

There is no universal “best” check valve for every sewage pump. Selection depends on the actual medium, solids and fibre content, pump duty, line size, velocity, installation orientation, available head loss and transient or surge conditions. Share the pump and pipeline data so the reverse-flow protection duty can be reviewed as part of the complete discharge arrangement.

05 Does a force main need air valves, and where should they be arranged?

Air-release and air/vacuum requirements should be reviewed from the pipeline profile and operating conditions, not added as a generic accessory. Provide the line route, high points, changes in gradient, pump start and stop conditions, minimum and maximum flow, pressure and expected transient conditions. The project design can then define the required air-management arrangement and valve data.

06 Is stainless steel or duplex automatically required for wastewater valves?

No. Material selection should follow the actual chemical and physical conditions: sulfide or H₂S exposure, pH, chlorides, disinfectants or dosing chemicals, concentration, temperature and contact time. Coated or lined ductile iron, stainless steel, duplex materials and elastomers each need review against the confirmed wetted service and project specification.

07 Can zpvevlave review an existing valve datasheet, MTO or valve schedule?

Yes. Send the available datasheet, MTO, valve schedule or technical specification. zpvevlave can review the stated valve type, pressure rating, materials, end connections, actuation and documentation requirements, then identify missing service data, conflicting requirements or points that need confirmation before the configuration and quotation are prepared.

08 Which inspection records and project documents should be agreed before ordering?

Agree the document and inspection scope during technical review, before the purchase order is released. Depending on confirmed project requirements, the package may include datasheets, drawings, material information, inspection plans and pressure-test records. Any witness point, hold point or third-party documentation requirement should also be identified at this stage.
