Service Conditions That Drive HVAC Valve Selection

The label “chilled-water valve” is not enough to define a suitable configuration. System flow, differential pressure, water chemistry, temperature and installation conditions must be reviewed together.

Design Flow, ΔP & Valve Authority

Confirm the design and minimum flow, coil or branch pressure loss, available valve differential pressure and maximum close-off pressure. These conditions affect Cv/Kv, valve authority, usable control range and actuator requirements; missing data can contribute to overflow, low-ΔT operation or unstable control.

Water, Glycol & Treatment Chemistry

Confirm the water condition, glycol type and concentration, treatment chemicals, operating temperature and makeup-water conditions. These details must be reviewed before defining body, trim, seat and sealing-material compatibility.

Open Condenser Water, Solids & Fouling

01 What information should I send for an HVAC valve quotation?

Send the valve schedule, P&ID, equipment datasheet or available project specification. For each line, include the application location, medium, glycol type and concentration where applicable, size, quantity, design flow, pressure–temperature conditions, end connection and manual or actuated operation. For a regulating valve, include the design and minimum flow, available valve differential pressure, control signal and required fail position where known.

02 Can zpvevlave review an HVAC valve schedule or equipment submittal?

Yes. Send the available schedule, P&ID and equipment data. The review can identify the information needed to confirm valve type, material, end connection, pressure rating and operating arrangement. Where a required service condition is not stated, it should be clarified before the valve configuration is confirmed.

03 Can an isolation valve also be used for modulating flow control?

Do not assume that an isolation valve is suitable for continuous flow regulation. Isolation and modulating duties place different demands on the valve. A control duty must be reviewed against the required flow range, Cv/Kv, available differential pressure, valve authority, close-off pressure and actuator arrangement. Confirm the duty first, then select the valve configuration around it.

04 Why are design flow and differential pressure required for control-valve selection?

Design flow and available valve differential pressure are used to establish the required flow capacity and the valve's workable control range. Without them, it is not possible to confirm whether the valve can regulate the intended flow at the actual system condition. Oversized or undersized control valves can operate over too narrow a range and may contribute to unstable temperature or flow control.

05 What must be confirmed for water-glycol service?

Confirm the glycol type, concentration, minimum and maximum operating temperature, treatment chemicals and expected makeup-water condition. The phrase “glycol service” alone does not define material or sealing compatibility. These details should be reviewed with the valve body, trim, seat and sealing requirements before a configuration is confirmed.

06 Which check valve should be used at an HVAC pump discharge?

Confirm the pump arrangement, design and minimum flow, line velocity, installation orientation, available pressure loss and expected behaviour when the pump stops. The required closing response depends on those conditions and on whether reverse flow, noise or pressure surge is a project concern. A check-valve type should therefore be selected against the confirmed duty rather than only the pipe size.

07 What should be confirmed for an electric actuator and BMS connection?

Provide the control signal, power supply, control mode, required fail position, operating time and feedback or auxiliary-switch requirements. The valve's closing force or close-off requirement must also be considered. A BMS connection should be specified from the project control sequence, not assumed from the valve size or application name.

08 What should be checked when chilled-water valves are insulated?

Confirm insulation thickness, valve orientation, stem or actuator clearance, access for manual operation and maintenance, and the connection arrangement. The installed valve must remain operable after insulation is applied. Where relevant, provide the available space around the pipe so that extension, neck length or actuator access can be reviewed before installation.
